Discover Magazine: Top 100 Stories of 2014: #43 First Organism With Artificial DNA Debuts
Discover magazine named Synthorx technology one of its Top 100 Stories of 2014. The article calls our breakthrough a chimera, referring to a creature made from the parts of different animals in Greek mythology.
The analogy refers to our ability to add new, synthetic nucleotides to the natural DNA code of E. coli. The chimeric bacteria then has two new nucleotides, X and Y, in addition to the four natural nucleotides, A, T, C, and G. This means the bacteria are now enabled with an expanded DNA alphabet to produce a wider range of proteins.
With this “chimeric” technology, we aim to create our next generation of peptide and protein therapeutics.
